What You'll Need
- An individual teacher or admin account included in a School or Homeschool plan
- A subscription to BrainPOP (3-8+), BrainPOP Jr., BrainPOP ELL, or BrainPOP Science
- For automated rostering: integration with Clever, ClassLink, or Google Workspace set up by an administrator.
Classes and Groups
Create a Class or Group
To create a class or group:
- Choose Dashboard from the menu bar on the homepage.
- In the Classes and Groups section of the Dashboard, choose + Create New.
- Choose New Class or New Group.
- Give the class or group a name and a grade level.
- Keep in mind that the name you choose will be visible to students.
- If your district or school manages content availability in BrainPOP based on grade level, we use the the grade level of their classes to determine whether a student can view a topic with limited availability.
- Choose Create a Class or Create Group to finish.
Add Students
You can add students to the class or group in two ways: by using the join code, or by selecting students from your other classes or groups.
Using the Join Code
Each class or group created is given a short, unique join code. Find the join code on the confirmation page when the class or group is created, or in the settings for the group or class.
Share the code with students to allow them to join the class. The downloadable handout contains cut out cards that can be printed and distributed to students.
Students will use the Join Code to join the class.
If the student already has an account:
-
Log in to BrainPOP and choose Join a Class from the menu bar (or when prompted, if the student has not already joined a class).
If the student does not already have an account:
-
On the login page, choose Join by Code.
-
Enter the class or group's join code and click Submit.
If the student does not already have an account, they can create a new one. They'll only need to enter their first and last name, and the username and password. Students do not need an email address to create an account.
If the student already has an account with a username and password, they can choose to Log In here instead. (If the student doesn't have a password because they log in with Clever, Google, ClassLink, or another way, they should log in first and choose Join a Class from the menu bar as described above.)
From Other Classes or Groups
If you already have classes or groups with students in them, you can select students to add to a new class or group. (This is particularly helpful for differentiation, pullout instruction, and classes or groups that are co-taught with IEPs or learning specialists.)
You can search for students by name, filter by class or group to narrow down the student list, and show only the students you've already selected to review before confirming.
Roster Classes Automatically
Using Clever or ClassLink
If your school integrates BrainPOP with Clever or ClassLink, your classes will be automatically rostered and updated. Find out more in these articles:
Using Google
If your school integrates BrainPOP with Google and you use Google Classroom, you can import your classes on demand. See how to do that here:
Using Canvas, Schoology, or Google Classroom with Clever LMS Connect
If your school has integrated BrainPOP with Clever alongside Canvas, Schoology or Google Classroom using Clever LMS Connect, you'll find your classes already rostered and can sync BrainPOP assignments to your gradebook. Find out more here:
Managing Classes and Groups
To manage your classes or groups, choose a class from the Dashboard or Classes and Groups page.
View the class or group's assignments and independent submissions. From this page, you can also invite a co-teacher, view students, or manage the class or group's settings.
- Choose View students to view the student list, where you can add or remove students, or edit the student's profile.
- Choose Settings to view the settings for the class or group. You can edit the name and grade level, find and download or copy the join code, and archive or delete the class or group.
When your school uses automated rostering with Clever or ClassLink, the class roster will be managed automatically overnight and cannot be edited or changed in BrainPOP. Classes imported from Google Classroom can be managed and changed in BrainPOP, as needed.
Update Class Roster can sync the class and pull through any changes since the last time the class was synced, without waiting for the next one.
Next Steps
Once you've created your classes, use the Assignment Builder to begin creating assignments for independent learning and assessment, differentiation, or optional bonus learning.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a class and a group?
Shhhh! There isn't really one... Classes and Groups have the same features and the same hierarchy. The Groups label is used to encourage and support teachers who need to organize smaller groups of students for differentiation rather than rely on the class for whole-group instruction.
Groups can be especially helpful for teachers whose classes are rostered automatically when they need to create custom student groups that aren't in their SIS.
My school rosters classes automatically. Can I create my own groups?
Yes! When you create groups in BrainPOP, you can select from students who already belong to your automatically-rostered classes. Groups that you create in BrainPOP will not be managed or changed by your overnight sync with Clever or ClassLink.
If students are removed from your school by the overnight sync, they will be removed from your groups as well.
What happens to my classes if my school changes?
When you leave a school and join a new school, all of the classes at your previous school will be deleted, along with their assignments.
If you join or belong to more than one school, you will see only the classes at the school you are logged into. Choose Switch School from the menu bar to change your logged-in school and view classes at another school.
