- A School or District plan that includes at least one of the following products: BrainPOP Jr., BrainPOP 3-8, BrainPOP ELL, BrainPOP Science
- A BrainPOP Teacher account with Clever-rostered classes
- Clever LMS Connect integration with BrainPOP set up by your Clever Administrator using Canvas, Schoology, or Google Classroom as the connected LMS.
Syncing an Assignment
From the Assignment Builder
When you create a BrainPOP assignment using Assignment Builder, you'll see the option to sync your assignment to Canvas, Google Classroom, or Schoology, depending on which LMS is configured with Clever.
- Create an assignment using the Assignment Builder.
- At the confirmation page, choose Sync to Canvas, Sync to Google Classroom, or Sync to Schoology (depending on your LMS):
- If you are assigning to more than one class, you'll see the option to sync the assignment for each eligible class on the confirmation page:
- You'll see a success notification and the button will be replaced by "Assignment synced to LMS" when assignment is synced.
- Navigate to the same class's assignments in your LMS to view the assignment there.
After Assigning
Didn't sync an assignment when you created it? No problem! Assignments can be synced later from your Assignments page or from the Assignment Report.
From the Assignments page:
- Locate the assignment and choose the action (triple-dot) menu.
- From the menu options, choose Sync to Canvas, Sync to Google Classroom, or Sync to Schoology (depending on your LMS):
From the Assignment Report:
- Choose the Sync icon in the Assignment header (hover over the icon to see more detail):
- When the assignment is synced, the Sync icon in the assignment report will change to a checkmarked Sync icon (hover over the icon to see more detail):
Which Assignments Can be Synced?
When syncing BrainPOP assignments to Canvas, Google Classroom, or Schoology using Clever LMS Connect, it's worth keeping a few considerations in mind to ensure the assignment can be synced:
- Live assignments: To begin syncing an assignment to the LMS, the assignment must be live — not scheduled for a future date, or past the due date set for the assignment.
- Clever classes vs. custom BrainPOP classes: Only assignments for classes rostered to BrainPOP by Clever can be synced to the LMS.
- Auto-graded activities: The assignment must contain an activity with at least one auto-graded question to be synced to the LMS. At this time, only scores for auto-graded questions can be synced to the LMS gradebook using Clever LMS Connect.
- BrainPOP Science CER: In addition to auto-graded activities, the CER activity in BrainPOP Science Investigations can also be synced to the LMS gradebook using Clever LMS Connect!
If an assignment cannot be synced, you may see one of the following errors.
The assignment is scheduled for a later date:
"LMS syncing is not available for assignments that are scheduled for later. You can come back and sync once the assignment is live for students."
The class the assignment belongs to is not a Clever-rostered class:
"LMS syncing is not available for this class because it is not connected through Clever LMS Connect. Please check with your administrator."
The assignment does not contain any activities with auto-graded questions:
"Assignments must include at least one auto-graded question to sync with your LMS."
What Students See
When you've synced an assignment, students will see a new assignment in the corresponding class in Canvas, Google Classroom, or Schoology.
The LMS version of the assignment will include the assignment's:
- Title
- Total points possible (counting all auto-graded questions)
- Due Date (if set)
- Instructions (if given)
The LMS version of the assignment will also include link to view the assignment on BrainPOP.
Clicking the link will automatically sign the student into BrainPOP and take them directly to the assignment in BrainPOP, where they can begin working on it!
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the number of points calculated when an assignment is synced?
When an assignment is synced to the LMS gradebook using LMS Connect, the number of points is based on the total points possible for all auto-graded questions in the activities contained in the assignment.
The only exception is for the CER portion of BrainPOP Science Investigations, which contains open-ended response questions. The CER will appear as a separate grade from the Investigation in the LMS gradebook.
Do students have to log in using the link from the assignment in order for their scores to be synced?
No. Students can log into BrainPOP using the link in the LMS version of the assignment, or however else they normally log in.
Whether they log in using the assignment link, from one of BrainPOP's apps in the Clever portal, or by using the "Sign in with Clever" button on our homepages, once they complete the assignment in BrainPOP their activity scores will be synced to the corresponding assignment in your LMS gradebook.
If I create an assignment using a BrainPOP topic in my LMS gradebook, can it be synced back to BrainPOP?
Not at this time. Our assignment sync using Clever LMS Connect is one-directional: in order to be synced, an assignment must be created in BrainPOP and then synced to the LMS.
Is there a way to sync assignment grades to my LMS gradebook without using Clever LMS Connect?
Not at this time. We are eager to support grade passback using other ways of integrating with LMS gradebooks, and will continue to work toward expanding our grade passback support in the future.
How can I tell if Clever LMS Connect is set up with BrainPOP for my school or district?
If your school or district is rostering your classes to BrainPOP using Clever and has set up Clever LMS Connect with BrainPOP, you will see the option to sync your assignment to Canvas, Google Classroom, or Schoology (depending on your LMS) when you create an assignment for a Clever-rostered class in the Assignment Builder, or when you view the Assignment Report in your Teacher Dashboard.
Can I set up Clever LMS Connect for my own classes only?
Not at this time. Clever LMS Connect requires configuration by a Clever Administrator, and cannot be set up only for certain classes. Once Clever LMS Connect is configured, it will be available for all classes synced to BrainPOP by Clever.
How can I tell if my district is using Clever LMS Connect but has not yet connected BrainPOP?
Check with your school or district's Clever Administrator! You can share our guide to setting up Clever LMS Connect with them to help them get started.
