What Is Microsoft Immersive Reader?
Many of BrainPOP's activities are integrated with Microsoft Immersive Reader, a third-party tool offering a variety of features to support students' reading needs. Those features include:
Read-aloud questions and answers
Multi-lingual support and a picture dictionary
Text decoding to support students with learning differences
Currently, Microsoft Immersive Reader is available for teachers and students in the following activities:
| BrainPOP Jr. |
|
| BrainPOP |
|
| BrainPOP Science |
|
| BrainPOP ELL |
|
| BrainPOP Español & Francais |
|
Activities that are integrated with Immersive Reader will display an Immersive Reader "pill" on the activity overview page:
Once inside the activity player, the the Immersive Reader icon can be found at the top right of the activity header:
In a Movie transcript, the Immersive Reader icon can be found next to the movie title:
Using the Immersive Reader
Clicking the Immersive Reader icon will open Immersive Reader as an overlay.
Choose the Play button below the text to begin hearing the text read aloud. Voice options next to the play button allow the learner to slow down or speed up the text and choose a female or male-coded digital voice.
The text read by the Immersive Reader varies depending on the activity, but will typically read the questions and answer choices (for example, in a Quiz). In activities such as Connected Texts, BrainPOP Science Related Reading, and Movie transcripts, the text passage and instruction content will be read as well:
There are multiple tools and settings that can be adjusted depending on the learner's needs. Text preferences let the reader choose text size and spacing, font, background theme and text formatting:
Grammar options allow the reader to highlight and label parts of speech and add syllable separators:
Reading preferences allow the reader to focus on one or a few lines, use pictures to visualize chosen words, and translate into other languages:
Clicking the arrow in the top left corner will exit the immersive reader; bringing them back to the activity player where they can answer the questions and continue the activity.
On the next page of the activity, they can open the reader again. The previously-chosen settings should still apply as they proceed through the activity.
